ABOUT KIRK Mochrie, PhD
BIO: Dr. Mochrie is originally from Cary, NC. He completed his predoctoral internship at Mental Health Systems, PC (Eagan, MN) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the TAP Clinic, where he focused on deepening his knowledge of DBT. He is excited to be living back in the RDU area after completing his doctoral degree in August 2019. Dr. Mochrie enjoys spending his time with his daughter and friends, playing guitar (rock n’ roll), cooking/grilling, taking care of animals, and watching sports. In addition, he is extremely enthusiastic about DBT, ADHD treatment, and assessment and thoroughly enjoys his clinical work and related research activities.
TRAINING: Dr. Mochrie completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNC-W). He also received his masters degree from UNC-W in Clinical Psychology, with a specialization in Substance Abuse Treatment. Finally, he completed his doctorate degree in Clinical Health Psychology at East Carolina University. While in graduate school, Dr. Mochrie rotated through various training sites including several general psychology outpatient clinics, a substance abuse outpatient facility, college counseling center, family medicine practice, and a Veterans Affairs office. Moreover, he has received specialized training in Motivational Interviewing (MI) for Substance Use Disorders, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Activation (BA), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). On his predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Mochrie received more intensive training in utilizing DBT with various patient populations, including individuals with Substance Use Disorders. Dr. Mochrie also has interest and training in working with individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He completed his doctoral dissertation on treatment/coaching with ADHD and substance use, has completed numerous ADHD psychological evaluations, and currently provides psychoeducational/ADHD evaluations and ADHD coaching to individual therapy clients. In addition, Dr. Mochrie attends at least two international conferences each year to present research related to DBT, ADHD, and substance use, as well as to stay current in these treatment modalities.
EXPERTISE: Dr. Mochrie has expertise in the treatment of mood disorders and associated concerns, including anxiety and depression, personality disorders (primarily Borderline Personality Disorder), Substance Use Disorders, and ADHD. He has received specialized training in DBT for individuals who experience significant emotion dysregulation and who engage in self-injury and suicidal behaviors as well as extensive training in working with individuals who engage in problematic substance use. He has obtained individual therapist certification in DBT through the Linehan Board of Certification (LBC). Dr. Mochrie also has expertise in assessment and provides psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic evaluations for various mental health disorders including learning disorders and ADHD.

POPULATIONS SERVED: Dr. Mochrie sees both adults (ages 18+) and adolescents (ages 12+) for
individual therapy. He provides DBT skills group treatment for adults and adolescents. Dr. Mochrie does not see children under 12 or provide couples therapy or family therapy.
Dr. Mochrie sees children and adolescents (ages 10 to 17) for psychoeducational assessments, as well as adolescents (12+) and adults for psychodiagnostic evaluations.
