Differential Diagnostic Assessments

We provide specialist evaluations for two specific disorders that are frequently misdiagnosed: borderline personality disorder (BPD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). We often hear from clients that they have received these diagnoses and are unsure if they are accurate, either as stand-alone or co-morbid diagnoses. Confusion often exists around distinguishing borderline personality disorder from bipolar disorder, or in distinguishing OCD from other anxiety disorders (especially generalized anxiety disorder), and some clients may meet criteria for multiple diagnoses and need a treatment plan that addresses two or more conditions simultaneously. We have considerable expertise and training in these two areas, as well as extensive experience treating both conditions. As such, we provide diagnostic evaluations and treatment recommendations for both BPD and OCD. Evaluations typically include records review, an interview, and potentially interviewing other family members for collateral information. We are happy to conduct these evaluations regardless of your intention to seek treatment at TAP (e.g., if you live out of the area), and we will provide you with a summary of our findings and treatment recommendations so that you can take them to a provider of your choice.

In addition, we can provide psychoeducation for clients and family members about both BPD and OCD. Both diagnoses are complex and are often confusing, and our expert clinicians can help clarify and explain symptoms and treatment options.
